John A. Hovanesian, MD, FACS

Dr. John Hovanesian joined Harvard Eye Associates in 1999 after spending two years as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute. At UCLA, Dr. Hovanesian specialized in refractive and corneal surgery and received international acclaim for his research in optimizing the quality of vision after laser vision correction. He continues to teach surgical technique to hundreds of doctors and has been invited to perform surgery in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Dr. Hovanesian regularly lectures in visual optics to scientists from around the country. He has published numerous research studies and has lectured internationally on refractive surgery, optics, and corneal disease.

Dr. Hovanesian continues to publish research on modern corneal and pterygium surgery . He is currently conducting research studies on LASIK complication prevention, dry eye , no-stitch pterygium surgery, and new methods of corneal transplantation .

Prior to developing an interest in laser vision correction, Dr. Hovanesian published research on improving the vision of glaucoma surgery patients at the University of Michigan's Kellogg Eye Center, where he also attended medical school and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society as an undergraduate.

Dr. Hovanesian is a reviewer for Ophthalmology, the world's premier journal for eye surgery research. He also reviews new technology for other international publications for eye surgeons. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, and the Orange County Ophthalmology Society. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute.

An Eagle Scout, Dr. Hovanesian has spent many years as a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and has received their highest award for volunteer service. His hobbies include food, swimming, piano, and performing magic.
